The Harding Miller Education Foundation

The Harding Miller Education Foundation (HMEF) is an Australian charity and Public Benevolent Institution. Its mission is to create a positive social impact by lifting educational outcomes for Australian girls with high academic potential who are experiencing disadvantages. It was established in 2015 by Kim Harding and Irene Miller, both of whom are long-term, dynamic advocates for girls and public education.

In 2022, Harding Miller awarded scholarships to 162 scholars, and as of December 2021, HMEF has delivered $2M worth of tutoring, $500K of online homework help, $1 million worth of uniforms, textbooks and fees, $13 million in technology, as well as delivering 50,000 hours of tutoring through over 345 different tutors across Australia.

What does an HMEF scholarship provide?

The scholarship includes a toolkit of resources to support the successful applicants over four years. This includes a high-quality laptop in the first year, as well as ongoing IT support, high-speed internet, $2500 worth of online or face-to-face tutoring, 24/7 online homework help and a prepaid expense card for essential school needs such as uniforms, textbooks, school fees, and excursions. Successful applicants also have access to online career platforms and career profiling, a Study Skills Handbook and Subject Selection booklet. New scholars and their families are also invited to attend an Awards Night in term two of Year 9. Every successful applicant is allocated a personal coach (Mentor) who supports and guides them through the four-year program. And applicants find having the dedicated support and guidance of someone who believes in them, and who can help them navigate their future makes all the difference.

“Education has the power to change the world, and scholarships hold the power to change the course of your life. Education for women is critical and scholarships can achieve that for all women. With strong educational backgrounds, women have the capacity to achieve their goals and create financial freedom for both themselves and their families. Isn’t that a perfect blend?… My life has been completely changed for the better because of a high school scholarship through the Harding Miller Education Foundation.” Hibba, Harding Miller Education Foundation Alumni

Harding Miller also provides an enrichment program to introduce scholars to a range of career experiences to broaden their horizons about potential tertiary education pathways. Harding Miller works with a range of industry partners too, including 3M, Mastercard, Ernst and Young, Allen & Overy, USYD, UNSW, and The University of New England, among others.

Why girls’ education?

In the wise words of Karen DeCrow: “Education, doing homework, is the way to lift up girls. Around the world, where girls are educated, the economy and the standard of living rise.

The following statistics from the Harding Miller website show what that looks like in an Australian context:

  • Harnessing the potential of women would increase the Australian GDP by 11%. (Source: Goldman Sachs)
  • The estimated pay gap between men and women currently costs the Australian economy $93 billion every year.
  • Women in Australia are two and a half times more likely than men to live in poverty in their old age.
  • Girls will earn up to 25% more income for each year of additional education.
  • Women work 66% of the world’s working hours yet earn only 10% of the world’s income.
  • On average women reinvest 90% of their wages into the family, while men reinvest 30-40%.
